The town of Burlington was originally platted by a land speculator named Lowell about one mile west of where it is today. Lowell's problem is that he didn't know exactly where the railroad would come through and he also didn't have title to the property. So when the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad did arrive in 1888, they built their depot where it stands today, and those folks who'd bought from Lowell and built in the wrong place bought new lots from the railroad agents and moved their buildings to the new townsite.
