The Big South Trail is about 12.2 miles long (one way), heavily used and is rated as More Difficult.
Trailhead Location: Travel 11 miles northwest of Fort Collins on U.S. Highway 287 and Colorado Highway 14. Turn left on CO 14, and travel 49 miles west. Trailhead parking is located on the left just before the road crosses the bridge leading into the Big South Campground. This trail is within the Comanche Peak Wilderness. The trail follows the Poudre River and intersects the river after seven miles. There is no bridge over the river and fording the river is not always possible, particulary during spring runoff. Camping along this trail is limited to designated sites only and no campfires are allowed anywhere. |
