This 6.6 mile trail that rises north into the Mt. Evans Wilderness is rated as moderately difficult. Most hikers are on this trail in the summer and fall.
Access: 40 miles southwest of Denver on US 285, turn north at Grant onto the Guanella Pass Road (Park County 62). Go about 2.8 miles to the trailhead on the east side of the road. Notes: For the first part of the trail, you'll be following Threemile Creek northeast through a narrow canyon with lots of stream crossings. After a bit, the trail will turn more to the east and open out into a long meadow. East of Spearhead Mountain you'll come to a steep series of switchbacks as the trail rises away from the creek. Check out the views to the south and west as you go up the hill. At the top of the switchbacks the trail heads north. From here the trail still rises but not as steeply. Before too long you'll cross treeline and head out across the open tundra. West of you is Kataka Mountain, with Bierstadt and Evans to the north-northwest. The trail continues a bit further north, dropping slightly to its end at the junction with the Rosalie Trail. USGS Maps: Mt. Logan, Mt. Evans |
