This trail is is about 4 miles one way from 2WD parking, and about 2 miles one way from 4WD parking. While the trail is rated as moderate, the 3,400' in elevation gain can be hard. As Huron is a 14er, there is traffic on the mountain all year round, but it is heaviest in the summer and fall, especially heavy on weekends and holidays.
Access: Take Chaffee County Road 390 west from US 24 at Clear Creek Reservoir for 11.8 miles to Winfield. In the center of Winfield turn south and cross Clear Creek on the bridge, then turn west and follow the road another 0.3 miles. The road gets much rougher here and this is the parking area for 2WD vehicles. 4WD vehicles with good clearance can go another 2 miles to the Forest Service road closure at 10,600'. Notes: From the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness boundary (the gate at 4WD parking), go another 100 yards south and then turn southeast onto the Colorado Fourteener Initiative trail that heads steeply up the hill. Lots of switchbacks on the well defined trail will lead you up onto the shoulder of the mountain between Browns Peak and Huron. Just above the last switchback you'll cross into a beautiful small basin at about 12,300'. From here the trail continues to the southeast and winds up the long, northwest slope to Huron's summit.
