This moderately difficult, 4.5 mile trail is a favorite among fishermen. It sees most traffic in the summer and early fall.
Access: Go west on US 50 from Poncha Springs for 2 miles, then turn south on County Road 210. The first 4 miles aren't too bad but the last 3.25 miles, you'll want 4WD and high clearance. Little Cochetopa Trailhead is at the end of the road. Notes: Little Cochetopa Trail parallels Little Cochetopa Creek (good brook trout, especially in the beaver ponds) and heads up the hill past the creek's source to the Continental Divide. The trail crests the ridge at the saddle between Chipeta Mountain and Mt. Ouray. From there you can follow the Colorado Trail - Continental Divide Trail down to Marshall Pass. Or, if you climb to the top of Mt. Ouray, you'll have summited one of Colorado's 100 highest peaks. Great views, good hiking. USGS Maps: Mount Ouray |
