This moderately difficult hike to the Macey Lakes in the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness is about 3.8 miles long, once you turn off the Rainbow Trail. The trail sees most business in the summer and fall.
Access: Go south of Westcliffe on State Road 69 to County Road 140 (Schoolfield Lane) and head west to Macey Lane (CR 129). Go south on CR 129 to the Horn Road (CR 130), turn west and go to the end of the road at the Horn Creek Trailhead. From there, take the Rainbow Trail south for a bit more than 2 miles to the junction with the Macey Trail. Then turn west and head up the hill. Notes: First, you'll be under the Copperstain Cliff on Little Baldy Mountain. Then, right between Little Baldy and Colony Baldy you'll pass by Macey Falls. The lakes themselves are in the cirque with Kit Carson Peak to the southwest and the Crestones to the south. USGS Maps: Horn Peak, Crestone Peak |
