This moderate-to-difficult, 5 mile trail into the eastern Sangre de Cristo Mountains sees most of its traffic in the summer and fall. Most of this trail is in the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness so wilderness rules and regs apply.
Access: Just south of Hillside on State Highway 69, turn west on Lake Creek Road (County Road 198). Go about 2 miles, then turn south (left) at the Forest Service sign for Brush Lakes. The road is rough and rocky but usable by a 2WD. Go to the end. Notes: From the end of the road, follow the Rainbow Trail south for about 5 miles to the junction with the South Brush Creek Trail. From there, it is about 4.5 miles west to the saddle on the ridge between De Anza Peak (13,362') and Electric Peak (13,598'). At the saddle is the junction with the Crossover Trail. Go north on the Crossover Trail and you'll drop down to Banjo Lake (still above treeline) in about 1/2 mile. Or you can cross the ridge and drop down into Horsethief Basin on the Rio Grande National Forest side of the mountains. USGS Maps: Electric Peak |
