Glenwood Canyon was cut into the solid rock by the flow of the Colorado River over the last so many millions of years. This is the route followed by a railroad track and by the I-70 across western Colorado. I haven't gotten much in the way of photos yet because there's a shortage of safe stopping places, but every time I drive through here I find a couple more (this is on the route between Eagle and Glenwood Springs). The canyon is about 13 miles long and is simply spectacular. The engineers who designed and built the I-70 through here were creative in their designs and haven't detracted from the sheer splendor of the rock faces much at all. If only there were more turnouts... but with the narrowness of most of the canyon, that would be hard. There seems to be a bicycle trail the whole length of the canyon, that would be a very interesting ride... |
