Buffalo Crossing Campground

Access: Go 2 miles north of Alpine on US 191, turn west on Forest Road 249. Follow this for 5 miles to Forest Road 276. Turn on Forest Road 276 and gosouth for 6 miles to the developed camping area at the East Fork of the Black River.

Elevation: 7,540'

Season is generally May through October, depending on the weather.

Buffalo Crossing Campground is at the southern end of the East Fork Canyon and offers the largest campsites along the river. The campground is actually an old CCC site from the 1930's. This is a great area for fishing and the sites are not reservable: everything is first come - first served.

Facilities:

  • 16 single unit campsites with rock fire rings
  • Vault toilets, handicap-accessible

Other notes:

  • Concessionaire operated but no utilities
  • Drinking water is available
  • Pets must be on a leash or otherwise restrained
