Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest
South Fork Campground

South Fork Campground

Access: South Fork Campground is south of State Road 260 at the end of Apache County Road 4124, next to the community of South Fork.

Elevation: 7,928'

The campground is open all year, depending on the weather, although the road in is not plowed in the winter.

This campground was once a fish hatchery and CCC camp but was converted into a campground about 1940. The site is located among the Ponderosas around a riparian area along the South Fork of the Little Colorado River. South Fork Trail #97 leaves from the campground and travels 7 miles southeast to Mexican Hay Lake.

The ridge east of the campground was part of a 400-acre human-caused wildfire back in 1989. In some areas the fire killed whole stands of trees while in others it just skimmed over the grass: fairly typical forest fire behavior. Follow some of the game trails through the burn area and you'll learn a lot about backcountry recovery after such an event.

Facilities:

  • 8 campsites with picnic tables, fire rings and grills, to accommodate tents, trailers and motorhomes up to 32 feet long
  • Vault toilets and drinking water available
  • On site campground hosts (in the summer)

Other notes:

  • Nearest dump stations are in Springerville/Eagar or in Greer.
  • Restrain or leash your pets.
  • Don't drink the stream water, it's not treated for human use.
