Apache - Sitgreaves National Forest

Highline Trail #98

The Highline Trail is reasonably level for its 14.6 miles as the elevation only varies 600 feet over the whole length. In the eastern parts of the trail, you'll be in Ponderosa forest but as you go west, the pines thin out and juniper and scrub oaks take over. This area is full of elk, mule deer, black bear, and wild turkey. The trail sees light use from April to December but I suspect that most folks are out here in hunting season. Along its route, the Highline Trail meets the Crabtree Trail, Salt House Trail, Chitty Creek Trail, McBride Mesa Trail, Squirrel Canyon Trail, Dry Prong Trail and Warren Canyon Trail. The eastern trailhead is at Strayhorse Campground while the western end of the trail is at the junction with Dry Prong Trail.

Elevation: 7,000' to 7,600'

Access: Go 61 miles north of Clifton on US 191 to Strayhorse Campground. The trail starts at the north end of the campground.
