Los Burros Trail #631

Los Burros is a 13 mile (one way) trail that is rated as moderate and sees little use, with most traffic happening between late spring and late fall. Because of the high elevation and the shade offered by the mixed conifer (spruce, pine, fir) and aspen forest, this is a good trail for those hot summer days when you just want to get out and scout out some elk and black bear country. From Wishbone Mountain on a clear day you can see the San Francisco Peaks, 100 miles away to the north of Flagstaff. Visitors are welcome at Lake Mountain Lookout but during peak fire season, you may be refused if the lookouts are busy.

Elevation: 7,000' to 8,370'

Access: Take State Road 260 to McNary on the White Mountain Apache Reservation. In McNary, turn left on Forest Road 224 and follow the signs to Vernon. Go about 8 miles until you see signs for Los Burros Campground. Turn right into the campground and go to the far end of it to find the trailhead.
