Apache-Sitgreaves National ForestMilitary Sinkhole Trail #966 |
|
|
The Military Sinkhole Trail is about 1.5 miles long and is rated as more difficult. It sees light use from the spring to the fall. Elevation: 6,750' to 7,600' In terms of steepness and hazards along the way, the Military Sinkhole Trail is probably the easiest trail to follow down off the Mogollon Rim. Except for some trees and shrubs that have regrown on the trail bed, the trail is as wide as a road. From the parking area, the views are spectacular. You'll be traveling through some great rock formations in addition to the Ponderosas, ferns and oaks. At the bottom of the Rim, the trail connects with State Road 260. You'll want to have good hiking shoes on and carry lots of water. Access: Follow State Road 260 to Forest Road 300, then go 2 miles to a signed parking area on the left just before the bridge. Or, from the north, follow Forest Road 34 to Forest Road 300. Turn left and go 1.3 miles past where the pavement starts. The trailhead will be on the right, just beyond the bridge.
