|
The Painted Bluff Trail passes through lots of old mining country in its 11.1 miles. The trail sees light use year-round, probably because it is rated as difficult. The biggest highlight of the trail (for me anyway) are the petroglyphs above Woods Canyon on Painted Bluff, about 500 feet above the trail itself. There are a number of caves and collapsed mining tunnels along this trail but don't give in to temptation: they are quite dangerous. The trail has several reasonably steep spots along its rocky path. You'll also come across several springs and some outcroppings of Fool's Gold. Elevation: 4,000' to 6,000' Access: Go north of Clifton 19 miles on US 191. The trailhead is on the west side of the road. USGS Maps: Clifton 348 NW |
