The Promontory Butte Trailhead is marked by a pile of rocks at the end of Forest Road 76B. The trail is about 3/4 miles long, drops very steeply off the edge of the Mogollon Rim and is rated as most difficult. At the bottom of the Rim it connects with the Highline Trail. Traffic is light and is mostly in the spring, summer and fall. Elevation: 6,700' to 7,850' Access: Take State Highway 260 to Forest Road 300. Follow FR 300 to the intersection with FR 76, turn left, go to FR 76B, turn right and go to the end of the road. Forest Road 76B is recommended for high-clearance vehicles only. From the north, follow Forest Road 34 to Forest Road 300 and turn right. Continue on FR 300 to FR 76 and then turn left. Go to FR 76B, turn right, go to the end of the road.
