Beaverhead - Deerlodge National Forest

The two National Wilderness Areas in the Beaverhead - Deerlodge National Forest are the Anaconda - Pintler and Lee Metcalf. Straddling the Continental Divide, the Anaconda - Pintler Wilderness Area includes some 158,656 acres in southwest Montana. The elevations vary from about 5,100' to 10,793' at West Goat Peak. Camping permits are free but required and wilderness restrictions apply. The Lee Metcalf Wilderness Area encompasses 255,00 acres divided into 4 separate units on the east side of the Beaverhead - Deerlodge National Forest. One of those units, the Beartrap Unit, is managed by the BLM. The other three units are managed by the National Forest Service with 142,000 acres of Lee Metcalf Wilderness Area within the Beaverhead - Deerlodge National Forest. Wilderness restrictions apply but camping permits are not required. Wherever you may camp here, this is Montana. Bear Country. Grizzly Bear Country. Be prepared, and set up your camp accordingly. |
