Questa Ranger District - Wheeler Peak Wilderness
Heading east out of Red River take the right fork at the east end of town and hjead south on State Road 578 for about 6.5 miles to where the pavement ends. There should be room for several cars to park at the trailhead. Ski across the bridge and head south on Forest Road 58A. Stay on the road through this area of private property. Shortly you'll come to the intersection with Trail 55. Go left and proceed about 2 miles to Sawmill Park. At the south end of Sawmill Park is an old, very steep trail that winds its way up onto Taos Cone (8 to 12 miles from where you parked your car, depending on how far up Taos Cone you make it). Rating: Parking area to Sawmill Park is rated novice to intermediate. Sawmill Park to Taos Cone is for experts only. USGS Quad: Pueblo Peak |
