This trail starts about 1.5 miles west (down the hill) of the Taos Ski Valley parking lot on State Road 150. The trail borders private land to the east. There is parking available but it is restricted to the area west of the private land. The trail is 3.3 miles long and rises some 2,000 feet in the first couple of miles as it makes its way along the south facing slope of Rio Hondo Canyon. The angle eases off a bit as you enter into the meadows near the ridgeline at the top. Avalanche hazard is something to be aware of during winter and early spring. Bakpacking, day hiking, pack and saddle, and backcountry camping is permitted the entire length of the trail. Motorized vehicles are not permitted. As this trail gives access to Flag Mountain, Lobo Peak, Gold Hill, and the Columbine/Hondo Wilderness Study Area, it sees moderate traffic. Rating: Expert USGS Quad: Wheeler Peak |
