Questa Ranger District
This trailhead is located 3 miles east (up the hill) of Upper Cuchilla Campground on State Road 150, the road to Taos Ski Valley. The trailhead itself is at the end of a short access road and parking is available there. This is a 3.7 mile trail located on the south facing slope of Rio Hondo Canyon. The trail follows the bottom of the canyon most of the time but rises 2,800 feet in that 3.7 miles. Winter and early spring are characterized by significant avalanche hazard along this canyon. Motorized vehicles are not allowed. Camping is permitted along the whole length of the trail and the trail gives access to Flag Mountain, Lobo Peak, Gold Hill and the Columbine/Hondo Wilderness Study Area.
