To get here, go 2 miles past (up the hill) Upper Cuchilla Campground on State Road 150, the road to Taos Ski Valley. Parking at the trailhead is very limited. This 4.2 mile trail gains 3,600 feet as it travels up the bottom of the canyon on the south facing slope of Rio Hondo Canyon. Because of the steepness of the slopes all around, the avalanche hazard in winter and spring can be pretty high. No motorized vehicles or equipment are allowed in here. This trail provides access to Flag Mountain, Gold Hill, Lobo Peak and the Columbine/Hondo Wilderness Study Area. Trail 58 and Trail 61 come to a junction on the ridge and lead right into Lobo Peak Trail 57. At 12,115 feet, Lobo Peak provides quite the view of the Wheeler Peak area and the valleys below. Rating: More difficult USGS Quad: Arroyo Seco |
