The 3.3 mile Cottonwood Trail follows Cottonwood Creek into the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. This is a difficult, summer and fall trail.
Access: Go south of Westcliffe on State Highway 69 to Schoolfield Road (Country Road 140). Go west to the Venable - Comanche Trailhead at the end of the road. Notes: The Cottonwood Trail leaves the Venable-Comanche Trailhead as part of the Rainbow Trail headed south. A little over a mile down the trail, the Cottonwood Trail branches off to the west (right). Nearly the entire trail is within the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Area so wilderness rules and regs apply.
