This 3.4 mile trail is rated as difficult, probably because it heads straight up into an eastern valley of the Sangre de Cristo's in the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. This trail sees most of its activity in the summer and fall.
Access: From Westcliffe go south on State Road 69 to Schoolfield Road (County Road 140) and go west. At Macey Lane (County Road 129) go left to County Road 130 (Horn Road). Turn right and go to the end of the road at the Horn Creek Trailhead. At the trailhead, follow the Rainbow Trail north about 3/4 miles to its intersection with the Dry Creek Trail. Notes: The Dry Creek Trail follows Dry Creek steeply up into the mountains to the Dry Lakes, a series of small lakes in the valley between Horn Peak and Little Horn Peak. If water is flowing in the creekbed, you'll pass a couple of small waterfalls along the way. USGS Maps: Horn Peak |
