San Isabel National Forest
Horn Peak Trail #1362

The Horn Peak Trail is about 3 miles long, and rated difficult as it climbs relentlessly to the 13,450' summit of Horn Peak. This trail sees most of its traffic in the summer and fall.

    Elevations:
  • Trail beginning: 9,400'
  • High Point: 13,450'
  • Trail ending: 13,450'

Access: Go south from Westcliffe on State Road 69 to County Road 140 (Schoolfield Lane), go west (right) to CR 129 (Macey lane). Turn left on CR 129 and go to Horn Road (CR 130). Turn right and go to the Horn Creek Trailhead at the end of the road. From there, follow the Rainbow Trail north to the junction with the Horn Peak Trail (about 1 mile). Turn left and head up the hill.

Notes: At first, the Horn Peak Trail follows the drainage until it comes to a trail reroute. The reroute takes you up onto the ridge that goes relentlessly uphill to the summit of Horn Peak (13,450'). Once on the reroute, only human foot traffic is allowed, no horses, mules or llamas. Hard as this trail is, the views are spectacular.
