Mt. Massive is a very large mountain with 5 separate points that reach higher than 14,000' on a 3-mile long summit ridge.
Access: Go 3 miles south of Leadville on US 24 and turn west onto Colorado 300 for 3/4 of a mile. At Lake County Road 11 go south, then southwest (follow the signs for Elbert Creek Campground). Go 0.3 miles past Elbert Creek Campground to the well-signed Mount Massive Trailhead. Notes: The East Slopes route is the easiest and most popular way to climb Massive. From the Mt. Massive Trailhead, follow the Colorado Trail northeast and then north for 3.3 miles to the 11,260' junction with the Mount Massive Trail. Turn west and follow that trail up Massive's gentle east slopes, heading for the prominent 13,900' saddle between South Massive (14,132') and the top-most summit of Massive, to the northeast. From the saddle there's a climber's trail leading west then north along the summit ridge to the top cairn. A round trip journey along this route is about 13.6 miles. Mount Oklahoma (13,845'), just to the west of Mt. Massive, is one of Colorado's 100 highest mounain peaks. USGS Maps: Mount Massive |
