San Isabel National Forest
Starvation Creek Trail #1408

This moderately difficult, 6.5 mile trail sees most traffic in the summer and fall.

    Elevations:
  • Trail beginning: 9,100'
  • High Point: 10,885'
  • Trail ending: 10,885'

Access: Go 4.5 miles south of Poncha Springs on US 285 and turn west on County Road 200. Follow CR 200 for about 2 miles to a trailhead at the Shirley site (this is not the trailhead for Starvation Creek). At the trailhead, turn right onto CR 203. After about 3/4 miles, you'll cross an old stone railroad bridge. Right after crossing the bridge the road turns left. Follow it another 2.5 miles to the trailhead.

Notes: The trail follows Starvation Creek up the hill, crossing the creek numerous times. The trail ends where it meets up with FR 203.1A, a 4WD road that climbs the hill to reach the Continental Divide (and the Colorado Trail). There's going to be meadows, beaver ponds and some stretches of heavy timber along the way.
