Elko County is in northeastern Nevada with Idaho to the north and Utah to the east. This is right on the western edge of the Great Salt Desert. Elko County contains 17,178 square miles of land and 24 square miles of water, making it the 4th largest county in the United States. One explanation of the county name credits Charles Crocker, railroad owner, who reportedly named the train depot after all the elk roaming the area, adding an "o" to form "Elko." Most of the county is within the Great Basin with a small section along the Idaho border that drains into the Snake River Basin. The county seat is Elko.
