Lander County is pretty much in the center of Nevada. It was one of the original 9 counties of Nevada created in 1861. Lander County is named for Frederick W. Lander, the federal engineer who, in 1857, built a wagon route through the area. Lander died in Virginia during the Civil War, after serving in Nevada as a Special Indian Agent. Lander County contains 5,493 square miles of land and 26 square miles of water. There are no incorporated communities in Lander County, including Battle Mountain. Austin was the county seat from 1863 until it was moved to Battle Mountain in 1979. |
