Mineral County is in southwestern Nevada with California to the southwest. Mineral County got its name from its heavily mineralized countryside. Mineral County contains 3,756 square miles of land and 57 square miles of water. Hawthorne is the site of the Hawthorne Army Ammunition Plant. Hawthorne is also the county seat. The first European to visit Mineral County was most likely Jedediah Smith in 1827 as he made his way across Nevada from west to east. He passed close to Walker Lake on this epic journey. The next recorded European in the area was the also famous Peter Skeen Ogden in 1829. Then Fremont came through on an expedition to California in 1845 with his guides Kit Carson and Joseph Walker (for whom Walker Lake and Walker River are named). |
