13 miles north of Alamosa on Highway 17, turn and go east 8 miles on Lane 6N to San Luis Lakes State Wildlife Area. Or, 17 miles north of Alamosa, turn and go east 4 miles on Twelve Mile Lane.

RESTRICTIONS: Hunting for cow elk only; all hunts allowed through hunt coodinator only, call DOW office in Monte Vista: 719-587-6900; foot or horseback access only.

State Wildlife Areas

Higel

Permit required September 1 through February 14 (Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays, holidays only), closed February 15 to July 15 to protect nesting birds, area wildlife manager may authorize special educational or scientific uses during closures. Call 719-587-6923 for details.

San Luis Lakes

From Alamosa go 13 miles north on Highway 17 to Sand Dunes Monument Road, then 8 miles east to access road, then 1/4 mile north to property.
HUNTING: Waterfowl, dove
FISHING: coldwater lake
RECREATION: wildlife observation
FACILITIES: boat ramp, parking areas
RESTRICTIONS: Boating prohibited north of buoy line; access prohibited north of buoy line and east-west fence line Feb. 15 - July 15; camping prohibited north of buoy line and east-west fence line.
