La Verkin, Utah

La Verkin and Hurricane just about butt up against each other: you can walk from one to the other in just a few minutes. Some folks think the name is a corruption of the Spanish name for the nearby Virgin River while others think it comes from an error in transcribing the term "beaver skin."

La Verkin achieved a bit of fame in 2001 when an ordinance was passed by the City Council declaring La Verkin a "United Nations-free zone."
