Farragut State Park

Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho
Lake Pend Oreille

Located on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, Farragut State Park was once the world's 2nd largest naval training station. On these 4,000 acres you'll find opportunities for swimming, picnicking, hiking, camping and boating. There's also the 18-hole Wreckreator and 18-hole Northstar disc golf courses. You can also visit the Farragut Naval Training Center Museum, enjoy the orienteering course, take the kids to the playground, the sand volleyball courts or the horseshoe pits, or just take advantage of the model airplane flyer's field.

Farragut State Park has more than 40 miles of hiking trails, including a route up the Highpoint Trail to the Scout Trail to the summit of Bernard Peak where you'll get a great view across the lake and over Farragut State Park. A lot of the facilities were built when Farragut Naval Training Station was in operation (1942-1946) and you'll find the Museum at the Memorial Plaza next to the Brig with some excellent artwork displays and a couple of restored military vehicles from the old days. Named in honor of David Glasgow Farragut, the first admiral of the US Navy, 293,381 men were trained for naval service here during World War II. At that time, with a population of more than 50,000, this was the largest city in Idaho. Over the years since 1946, this property has been used for a National Girl Scout Roundup (1965), a World Boy Scout Jamboree (1967), and the National Boy Scout Jamborees of 1969 and 1973. The park has also hosted tens of thousands of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for regional outings and campouts since the 1960's. Many campers were also visitors to Farragut State Park during the World's Fair in Spokane in 1974.

The Willow Day Use Area is located on Idlewild Bay, and offers stair access to Lake Pend Oreille's usually too-cold-for-swimming waters. At Beaver Bay, the lake is shallow enough that the water does warm enough in the summer to allow swimming without turning people blue from the cold. You can enjoy the sandy beach at Beaver Bay Beach for that. The Eagle Boat Launch is the only major boating access on the south end of Lake Pend Oreille.

There are 220 individual campsites at Farragut State Park. There's also 4 group camps, 10 camping cabins, 6 equestrian sites and several large group use areas including an outdoor amphitheater. Most sites are served by a central water system (hydrants) but many have electric and water at the site. You'll find restrooms and a shower house at each major campground. There is also a sanitary dump station for RV's at the park.
