Highwood Creek in the Highwood Mountains above Highwood, Montana |
Highwood, Montana is probably most known for the successes of its six-man football team. Between 1992 and 2008, the football team has won the Montana state six-man football title 11 times. The girls volleyball and basketball teams took the state titles in 2008, the girls basketball team repeating that performance in 2009. Pretty good considering Highwood High School enrollment averages 35 students in total... In the old days, the area around Highwood was big cattle-grazing land. There's some grain growing now but there's still a lot of cattle out there. The name supposedly comes from the fact that big trees grow high up on the slopes of the nearby Highwood Mountains. That treed area is now part of the Lewis & Clark National Forest. The town was built beside Highwood Creek along a railroad line that is now abandoned. Construction recently began on a major gas-fired electricity-generating plant just outside of Highwood. |
