Lake County is in northwestern Montana, around the southern edge of Flathead Lake. A large part of the county is part of the Flathead Indian Reservation. Lake County was formed in 1923 and contains 1,494 square miles of land and 160 square miles of water. The county seat is Polson.

Lake County is home to the Swan River, Pablo and Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuges, and to part of the National Bison Range.
