Chaves County is in southeastern New Mexico. Named in honor of Jose Francisco Chaves, Chaves County was formed in 1889 and contains 6,071 square miles of land and 4 square miles of water. The county seat is Roswell. Near Roswell is the site of the famous UFO crash in 1947. |
