The North Santa Theresa Wilderness borders the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, just north of the National Forest Service' Santa Theresa Wilderness. Protected within this 5,800-acre property is Black Rock, a nearly 1,000-foot-high rhyolite plug that exudes an undeniable mystical aura and has special spiritual significance to the San Carlos Apache. However, vandals have defaced the rock in the past and forced the Federal Government to take action to protect this place for the San Carlos Apache (as it is just beyond the boundaries of their reservation). Surrounded as it is by the reservation, State Trust Lands and by private land, the Wilderness has no open public access. You want to visit this other-worldly place, get permission first.
